Choosing the Right Waterproof Mattress Protector

The best waterproof mattress protector for you depends on how it will be used and the level of protection you need. A few things are worth thinking through before you buy:

Mattress size

Protectors are fitted, so an accurate size makes all the difference to how well they stay in place.

Everyday protection vs managing incontinence

A lighter protector may be enough to guard against the odd spill, while heavier incontinence use calls for something with a higher absorbency and a fully waterproof backing.

Reusable or disposable protection

Choose between reusable or disposable protection depending on how much flexibility you need day to day.

Comfort and breathability

Look for a soft, breathable top layer so the protector doesn't feel plasticky or noisy to sleep on.

Ease of washing

Machine-washable options make ongoing care far simpler, particularly for daily use.

Frequency of use

Occasional protection and everyday, round-the-clock use call for different levels of durability.

A good mattress protector does its job quietly. It should protect the mattress underneath while still feeling like a normal, comfortable sheet to sleep on.

Waterproof Mattress Protectors or Bed Pads?

Waterproof mattress protectors fit over the whole mattress and stay in place, giving continuous, all-over protection. Bed pads sit on top of the bed and can be moved, washed or disposed of independently of the rest of the bedding. This makes them a good option when you need extra absorbency in one area, or need to change protection quickly without stripping the whole bed.

Many customers find the two work well together, particularly for managing incontinence: a fitted mattress protector as the main line of defence, with a washable or disposable bed pad on top for easier day-to-day changes. If you're weighing up which is right for your situation, our Washable Bed Pads and Disposable Bed Pads are both worth a look.

Our Waterproof Bedding Range

Our waterproof bedding collection covers a few different products, each suited to slightly different needs:

Together, these products make it easier to protect furniture throughout the home, not just the bed.

Why Choose Waterproof Bedding?

Waterproof bedding isn't just about protecting a mattress; it's about making everyday life a little easier at home. It can help with:

  • Protecting mattresses from everyday leaks and spills
  • Managing incontinence at home, comfortably and discreetly
  • Extending the life of a mattress, so it doesn't need replacing as often
  • Reducing how frequently mattresses need deep cleaning
  • Giving carers and family members reassurance that a loved one's bed is properly protected

For many customers, it's a small, practical change that gives them one less thing to worry about.

Complete Your Bedroom Care Setup

A waterproof mattress protector often works best as part of a wider setup that supports comfort, safety and independence in the bedroom. Bed Grab Rails and Bed Raisers can make getting in and out of bed safer and less strenuous, while a Bed Tray & Table keeps everyday essentials within easy reach for anyone spending more time in bed. Our General Bedroom Aids collection covers other small products that can make a real difference to daily comfort too.

If you're looking at bedding more broadly, our Mattresses & Mattress Toppers and Pillows & Bed Cushions ranges add further comfort and support.

FAQs

Do I need a waterproof mattress protector or a washable bed pad?

It depends on your situation. A mattress protector gives continuous, all-over protection and is a good everyday base layer. A washable bed pad adds extra, targeted absorbency on top and is easier to swap out quickly, which is often useful for managing incontinence. Many people use both together.

Will a waterproof mattress protector affect comfort?

A good-quality protector shouldn't feel noticeably different to sleep on. Look for one with a soft, breathable top layer rather than a plain plastic surface, as this helps prevent the noisy, sweaty feel that cheaper protectors can have.

How do I wash a waterproof mattress protector?

Most of our waterproof mattress protectors are machine washable, though we'd always recommend checking the care label for the specific product, as washing temperatures and tumble-drying suitability can vary between styles.

What size waterproof mattress protector should I choose?

Measure your mattress before ordering, including its depth, as some protectors are designed for deeper mattresses than others. An accurate fit helps the protector stay securely in place and keeps it working as it should.

Can waterproof bedding help manage incontinence?

Yes. Waterproof mattress protectors, combined with washable or disposable bed pads, are commonly used to manage incontinence at home. They protect the mattress underneath while helping keep the sleeping surface comfortable, hygienic and dignified for the person using it.

Can I get help choosing the right waterproof bedding?

Yes, of course, our team is happy to help. If you're not sure whether a mattress protector, bed pad or a combination of both is right for your situation, get in touch via our Contact page and we'll talk you through your options.
